Johann Georg Goldammer is a forest and fire ecologist and founder of the Global Fire Monitoring Center (GFMC) at the Max Planck Institute for Chemistry and Freiburg University. He is serving as coordinator of the Global Wildland Fire Network and the Wildland Fire Advisory Goup of the UN international Strategy for Disaster Reduction (UNISDR) and the Eurasian Team of Specialists on Landscape Fire Management of the Council of Europe. The mission of GFMC and its international networks and teams is to reduce the negative impacts of landscape fires on the environment and humanity, and to advance the knowledge and application of the ecologically and environmentally benign role of natural fire in fire-dependent ecosystems, and sustainable application of fire in land-use systems. Besides serving as professor for fire ecology at Freiburg University he is a honorary doctor and scientific advisor at the National University of Mongolia and the National University for Life and Environmental Sciences of Ukraine.
